Abstract

Background and purpose: PAEDERUS DERMATITIS is a self-limiting bullous disease that is produced by a small insect of PAEDERUS species. Pederin is released from the insect when it is crushed or drawn on the skin and causes an acute DERMATITIS within 24 h.In northern provinces (Ghilan; Mazandaran) and with less incidence in khozestan the climate is suitable for PAEDERUS and they cause great problems for both native population and tourists.Materials and methods: It was an analytical descriptive study from March to October 2002 on 40 patients referred to dermatological clinic of Booalisina and Emam hospitals of SARI.Results: In this study 58% of the patients were female and 42% male. 63% of patients were aged between 21-40 years. The most common monthes of occurrence were Aug. and Sep (25%). 82% of the patients were urban and 18% of them were from rural areas. The face was the most frequent site of involvement (43%) and limbs (22%) showed the second incidence. The trunk was the least common site (15%).Erythema and edema were more common (51%), than pustule (23%) and bullous lesion (16%). Papule was seen less than other symptoms. Burning and Pruritus (41% & 29%) were the most common symptoms and 6% of patients were asymptomatic. Conclusion: Despite its severe acute appearance PAEDERUS DERMATITIS is a benign lesion and most patients are improved without complication within two weeks. Only a few percent of patients are complicated with transient hyperpigmentation the best approach of controlling the PAEDERUS infection is to avoid contacting them.
