Abstract

Background and Objectives: Considering interacting effects of genetics and environment in etiology of mental disorders it is supposed that emotional and behavioral symptoms in children of obsessive - compulsive MOTHERS are more frequent than other children. The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency of emotional and behavioral disorders signs and symptoms in CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS of obsessive - compulsive MOTHERS and healthy MOTHERS. In this study we were interested to know if children’s rearing style and particularly the obsessive - compulsive traits of their MOTHERS are effective in their mental health or not.Materials and Methods: Considering this hypothesis, 100 MOTHERS with OBSESSIVE - COMPULSIVE DISORDER were selected randomly, and a checklist of emotional and behavioral symptoms in their 5 to 18 year old children was completed. A similar checklist was completed for children of 100 healthy MOTHERS. The results obtained from the checklists were compared in two groups. Results: We used T - test, and found that average rate of emotional symptoms in children of obsessive - compulsive MOTHERS, is significantly higher than other children (P<0.01). Likewise, comparison of average rate of behavioral symptoms in two groups with the use of T- test indicated that behavioral symptoms in children of obsessive - compulsive MOTHERS is significantly higher than the other group of children (P<0.05). Conclusion: We concluded that although there is not any causal relationship between MOTHERS OBSESSIVE - COMPULSIVE DISORDER and emotional - behavioral disorder of their children, findings suggest that children of these MOTHERS are move vulnerable to emotional - behavioral disturbances than other children.
