Abstract

Ringing in the ears (Tinnitus) is a problem which in America alone afflicts nearly 37 million people. This research was carried out from 1996-1999 in regards to tinnitus and its effect on people's activity, different reports concerning the use and effect of acupuncture, and the lack of information about this ear problem in Iran. This experimental study was done on 36 patients, and we used the standard method of acupuncture in specific places on patients. The results of treatment were evaluated and studied through personal interview and Visual Analogue Scales (VAS). The research included 36 patients, male and female, afflicted with tinnitus from no obvious cause aged between 24-74. Results showed that 50% of these patients improved (P<0.007) in different degrees following one year of treatment. Regarding the rate of effectiveness acupuncture has on patients and ineffectiveness of most other kinds of tinnitus treatment, we found that acupuncture has a definite place for treating stressed and anxious patients with tinnitus.
