Abstract

Premature ejaculation is the most commonly experienced male sexual dysfunction. The efficacy of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor fluoxetine in the treatment of primary premature ejaculation was examined.Study comprised 126 men, 19 to 58 years of old (mean age 32 years) with primary premature ejaculation (3 of whom ejaculated before penetration). In this double-blind study the patients were randomized into treatment groups receiving 40 mg fluoxetine daily, 2 capsules (group 1, N=61) and 2 capsules placebo daily (group 2, N=65). Inclusion criteria were married be aged 18-60 and possible sexual intercourse at least once per week. Exclusion criteria were erectile dysfunction, genitourinary tract infection, systemic or neurological disorders, major psychiatric disorders, history of alcoholism or other substance and drug abuse.Intravaginal latency time were obtained before treatment (average time for 3 intercourse) and at the end of weeks 3 and 8. Possible side effects immediately reported. In fluoxetine group, intravaginal latency time before treatment was 30 seconds that increased to 7.5 and 9 minutes, 3 and 8 weeks after beginning treatment. The difference between latency time before and after treatment was statistically significant but not with difference between 3 and 8 weeks. In placebo group, intravaginal latency time before treatment was 26 seconds that increased to 33 and 25 seconds 3 and 8 weeks after beginning treatment but this increase was not significant. Only adverse effect was hypersomnia (in one patient).Fluoxetine can be considered as an adequate and safe treatment for primary premature ejaculation.
