Abstract

Introduction. Keratoscopy and keratometry are being used to measure and control astigmatism in eye surgery. Many studies in different foreign countries have been performed to define the correlation between ocular astigmatism measured by refraction and it's measurement by keratometry. This study was performed for the same purpose on a group of medical students of isfahan university. Methods. Astigmatic error of 256 randomly selected eyes of 128 medical students with the average age of 19.6:t 1.40 were measured by objective refraction and keratometer. The eyes had no history of trauma or surgery. The obtained results were compared by t-test.Results. In spite of good correlation Between measurement of Astigmatism by refraction (RA) and keratometry (KA) there was a statistically significant difference between the results of the two measurements (P<0.001).This difference was from 0.25D to 2.00 D. In 80% of cases RA=KA + 0.74 (±0.37) x 180˚ was found. Discussion. This study showed that in most instances of young adults keratometric asticmatism (corneal astigmatism) is in average 0.74±0.37 Diopter more than ocular astigmatism by refraction. This increase is in the direction of with the rule.
