Abstract

Introduction: Finasteride is an oral type two, 5 alpha reductase inhibitor. This drug is used in one mg daily doses for treatment of male pattern hair loss. Finasteride is used in higher doses for the treatment of BPH. We studied the potential effect of 1mg/dayfinasterideon semen volume and spermatogenesis in young men. Methods: In this prospective self control clinical trial 69 men (19 to 37 years old) were selected. They received 1 mg/day finasteride for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Semen sample were evaluated before and 8 months after beginning of treatment and the results underwent statistical analysis. Results: In our study the mean pre and post treatment semen volume was 4.3 ±2.1 cm3 and 3/1+ 1.9 cm3 respectively (P<0.01). The mean pre treatment sperm density was 62±28 ×106/mlit and the mean post treatment sperm density was 59±21×106/milt (P>0.05). Conclusions: In our study treatment with 1 mg/ day finasterid for 8 month did not affect spermatogenesis but semen volume was decreased.
