Abstract

Introduction: Varicocele is the most common correctable cause of infertility in men. Inguinal and retroperitoneal varicocelectomies are common approaches in Iran. In this study we want to compare the frequency of complications in these two different surgical routes.Methods: In this prospective study 132 patients with ,surgical indications of varicocele ablation divided into two equal groups and underwent varicocelectomy, one group with inguinal and the other with retroperitoneal approach, then every 2 months up to one year the patients were examined, the complications registered and compared. Results: The ferquency of varicocele recurrence in inguinal and retroperitoneal approaches was 7.5% and 16%, Pvalue < 0.01 testicular atroply 15.1% and 10.6% Pvalue < 0.05 and hydrocele 13.6% and 10.6% respectively Pvalue> 0.05.Discussion: It seems that risk of varicocele recurrence is less in inguinal than retroperitoneal varicocelectomy but the frequencies of atrophy and hydrocele are the same in these two approaches.
