Abstract

Introduction: Autistic disorder is one of the serious child psychiatric disorders that begins before the age of three and presents itself with qualitative impairment in social relationship, delay in language development, stereotypic movements and irritability. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of three therapeutic methods on autistic children.Methods: This study was a clinical trial performed in Isfahan AUTISM Center in 2003. Forty-five autistic children were randomly divided to three groups. The research tools included clinical interview according to DSM IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder) and post treatment evaluation questionnaire. After taking the pre-test, RISPERIDONE (5-2 mg/day) was administered to group one, special educational program according to LOVVAS was performed for group two and combination therapy was used for the third group. Six months later, post-test was performed for the three groups. Data was analyzed by SPSS software. Results: The findings revealed that all three methods (risperidone, education, combined therapy) were significantly effective on autistic children (P<0.05). Discussion: Drug therapy with RISPERIDONE was mainly effective on stereotypic behavior and hyperactivity, whereas, education improved the social relationship and language development.
