Abstract

Introduction: Brain tumors are of special significance due to their physiological and anatomical properties. Owing to clinical and morphological similarities, cerebellopontine angle (CPA) SCHWANNOMA and MENINGIOMA may be mistaken for each other. Furthermore, prognosis and recurrence rate of these tumors have major differences. Hence, using monoclonal antibody for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) can be useful for distinction of these two tumors.Materials and methods: This descriptive-analytical study was performed between 1999 and 2000 in hospitals affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Thirty-eight samples from CPA SCHWANNOMA and MENINGIOMA groups were stained for EMA using avidin-biotin complex immunostaining technique. Data were analyzed with SPSS software using chi-square test.Results: Reactivity for EMA was observed in 33 cases (86.6%) of SCHWANNOMA and 3 cases (7.9%) of MENINGIOMA (P=0.001), showing a significant difference.Discussion: According to obtained results, the use of EMA staining is suggested as an acceptable alternative for diagnosis and differentiation between CPA SCHWANNOMA and MENINGIOMA.
