Abstract

Introduction: DEPRESSION in the aging and aged is a major public health problem. It causes suffering too many who go undiagnosed and it burdens families and institutions providing care for the elderly by disabling those who might otherwise be able-bodied. The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of DEPRESSION and its related factors in two groups, i.e. I: NURSING HOME residents and II: elderly living in the community.Materials and methods: We compared two groups (124 NURSING HOME residents over the age of 65 and 397 subjects living in the community over the age of 65). To assess the prevalence of DEPRESSION and its related risk factors we used the validated GERIATRIC DEPRESSION Scale (GDS) in screening for DEPRESSION.Results: DEPRESSION in group I was 86.4% versus 44.6% in, group II. Sex and level of education were significantly related to DEPRESSION in group I (P<0.05) and in group II sex, level of education, marital status and number of medical problems were related with DEPRESSION (P<0.05).Comparison of group I and group II showed DEPRESSION to be significantly related to age, sex, education, marital status, and number of medical problems.Discussion: We conclude that the NURSING HOME residents may be a high risk group for DEPRESSION and that sex, age, marital status, level of education, and number of medical problems are statistically related to DEPRESSION and hence can be considered as DEPRESSION risk factors.
