Abstract

Introduction: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococci, GBS) is the predominant agent responsible for invasive perinatal and maternal infections such as sepsis, bacterial meningitis, chorioamnionitis, etc. To obtain reliable data for vaginal and anorectal carriage of GBS, pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation were screened in Isfahan, Iran.Methods: A total of 170 pregnant women were screened. GBS were identified via colonial morphology, β-hemolysis, and biochemical reactions. Associations between age, gestational age, parity, and antecedent abortion were evaluated by using Pearson's l and Student's Hest. Data were statistically al1alyzedusing SPSS version 11.5.Results: The prevalence of vaginal and rectal GBS colonization was 18.2%. Colonization rates were significantly increased in multigravidity (P=0.04), presence of background illness (P=0.049), and antecedent abortion (P=0.01). Discussion: The colonization rate of GBS among pregnant women in the present study is high. On the basis of documented benefits of antenatal screening in the West, we suggest routine screening, especially for high-risk patients (multigravidity, background illness, and antecedent abortion).
