Abstract

Introduction: Zinc is an essential element for human growth and development. In recent surveys, the prevalence of zinc deficiency nutritional syndrome was reported between 17 and 43 percent. In view of the important role of zinc during pregnancy, this study was designed to assess baseline levels of this micronutrient as well as its related factors in pregnant women in the city of Isfahan.Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed 105 pregnant women (in urban and rural settings). Multistage simple randomized sampling was used and 105 pregnant women were selected at health centers and were included in the study. After obtaining written consent, food frequency questionnaires were completed for the participants and 10 ml fasting venous blood samples were taken from them. Plasma zinc levels of blood samples were assessed using the Atomic Absorption Method. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS.Results: The Patients' mean age was 23.6±5.3 years and their mean plasma zinc concentration was 65.4±6.8) µg/dl, showing significant zinc deficiency in 72% of the participants. The lowest plasma zinc concentrations were seen in pregnant women with body mass index (BMI) less than 20, inadequate intake of meat and dairy products, multiple pregnancies (high gravidity, 6 or more), house wives, college graduates, women aged below 16 years, city inhabitants, and active smokers. Discussion: These results are evidence of zinc deficiency in all pregnant women receiving health care in the city of Isfahan. In view of the complications of severe zinc deficiency especially in multiple pregnancies, conditions of inadequate nutrition and extremes of maternal age spectrum «16 and >36 years), it could jeopardize pregnancy and increase health problems. Given the severity of deficiency and inadequacy of dietary zinc, zinc supplementation during pregnancy is of great importance.
