Abstract

Introduction. In addition to increasse in the rate of fetal and maternal infections, prolonged labor has other consequences like increased hospitalization costs, psychological disturbances in mothers, and the need for cesarean section. Oxytocin infusion is one of the preventive methods for prolonged labor and latent phase shortening. So, we set out to determine whether increasing the primary dose of oxytocin and the use of more dose of oxytocin at longer intervals could shorten labor duration.Methods. Our subjects were among the pregnant women with 40 weeks gestation and more without any contraindication for normal vaginat delivery (NVD), with Bishop score<; 4. Their fetal heart rate were monitored before induction they were examined every hour in the case of intact membranes. Some specific days of the week were attended for group A, and the others for group B.Results. In group A & B the mean time for begining of induction to active phase was 532 and 319 min, the mean duration for induction to pregnancy termination was 771 and 442 min and mean duration of active phase was 243 & 141 min respectively. There was no significant difference between uterine hyperstimulation cesarean cases, and fetal complications.Discussion. We can cause a shorter labor for mothers, without increase in fetal and maternal complications, by increasing the intervals and dose of oxytocin from 20 mins and 2.5mu/min to 40 mins and 5 um/min, respectively.
