Abstract

Introduction. Lipoprotein (a) {LP(a)} is considered as independent risk factor for premature cardiovascular disease. The relation between plasma LP (a) and severity of angiography of coronary arteries have been studied with different results. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the importance of serum LP (a) level and its relation with severity of coronary artery lesions at angiography.Methods. The study was based on investigation of clinical variables, lipid variables and angiographic scores in 92 white patients undergoing coronary angiography for chronic stable angia. Venous blood samples were collected before angiography for LP (a) levels and lipid profile analysis.Results. Plasma LP(a) levels were significantly higher (55:t45 mg/dl) in patients with two vessel disease while it was 30.3:t27 mg/dl and 26.9:t 15 mg/dl in patients with one- vessel and three-vessel disease respectively. Discussion. The results of this study did not indicate any significant difference between plasma LP(a) levels in subset of patients with coronary artery disease, classified according to the number of involved vesseles or the extent of lesions in angiography.
