Abstract

Incidence of H.pylori infection in stomach of patients with reflux esophagitis should be evaluated because the role of H.Pylori, if becoming apparent will have a great impact on treatment of reflux esophagitis. The study began in 1378 and during one year 55 patients free from histologic reflux esophagitis were undergone endoscopic biopsy of gastric mucosa for assessment of the presence of H.pylori. At the laboratory of Al-Zahra hospital in Isfahan the Hand E staining was conducted on esophageal biopsies, and giemsastaining on gastric biopsies. The slides were examined microscopically by a pathology resident and a pathologist. From 55 patients with reflux esophagitis, 43 (78.2%) had H.pylori in stomach, and for the 55 patients without reflux esophagitis this figure was 34 (61.8%), which shows a significant (p<0.05, Z=1.89, in a 1-tail probability test for comparing ratios) difference. Since many studies have revealed the risk of developing esophagitis after anti, H.pylori therapy. It appears necessary to conduct further work to assess the changes in gastric sectetory and motor activity due to infection with H.pylori and to evaluate coincidental herapy of H.pylori and reflux esophagitis.
