Abstract

The high incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting remains a major problem of day -case surgery especially after certain operation such as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). On the other hand postoperative nausea and vomiting are common complications that result in patient discomfort, prolonged stay in post anesthesia care unit (PACU), and, rarely, one of the pulmonary aspiration syndromes. Postoperative nausea and vomiting are often multifactorial in origin. The use of nitrous oxide dose appears to increase the incidence of nausea and vomiting. One survey of the literature reviewed 27 publications and found that all but 3 contained evidence implicating nitrous oxide in postoperative nausea and vomiting. Some researches imply that nitrous oxide should be abandoned and some say its use must be evaluated carefully when attempting to design an anesthetic regimen with a lower incidence of nausea and vomiting. , The type of surgical procedure has an important influence on the occurrence of nausea and vomiting. This randomized, double-blind study compared the effect of nitrous oxide with half MAC excess of halothane for potentiating nausea and vomiting in 120 ASA1 patients undergoing general anesthesia for dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). The groups were similar with respect to demographic data and potential confounding variables. The incidence of nausea and vomiting in N20 group was 16.66% and 15% for control group and Pvalue = 0.682 so there were no significant differences between two groups. The use of nitrous oxide dose not appear to increase he incidence of nausea and vomiting in  DCR.
