Abstract

Introduction. Because of increasing prevalence of intravenous drug addiction, its complications are naturally increasing. One of the most unpleasant complications is limb loss due to pseudoaneurism, infectionus abcess or nerve injuries. In this study the relative frequency, indications & the level of amputation in these patients were assessed, also the role of demographic variables, duration of addiction & the kind of subtance used, as predictors of amputation were evaluated. Methods. In a retrospective study performed in Kashani & Al-Zahra Hospitals, 400 patients were enrolled. The data were obtained from the patients records and analyzed.Results. The relative frequency of amputation was 9 percent. The duration of addiction in more than 80 percent of patients was less than 5 years. 396 (99%) of all patients and all who had experienced amputation were male. 52.7 percent were 20-35 years old. The leading cause of amputation was pseudoaneurism, and heroin was the most common substance used. The ration of above knee amputation to below knee amputation (AKAIBNA) was 9110.Discussion. The relative frequency of amputation and its indications were similar to studies in western countries but the demographic distribution of evaluated variables were similar in patients who experienced amputation and others.
