Abstract

Vascular injuries of the UPPER EXTREMITY represent approximately 30%to 50% of all peripheral injuries. The majority of injuries are at the site of brachial artery, and return of function is often related to concomitant injury to peripheral nerves. This is a retrospective review of 109 patients who were admitted on for presumed UPPER EXTREMITY ARTERIAL TRAUMA between 1981-1996. Preliminary physical examination and follow -up information obtained from medical record. There were 83 men and 19 women and average age were 28 years. The forearm arteries were most frequently involved, followed by axillary and subclavian artery. In addition to the ARTERIAL injuries 69% had another injuries, including 61 nerve injuries, and 13 venous injuries. The most frequent surgical option was primary anastomosis.Full function recovery was seen in 79 patients.Low mortality and moderately high morbidity is the rule of ARTERIAL UPPER EXTREMITY injuries. The magnitude of the concomitant neurologic injury is the major determinate of functional outcome in our patient population.
