Title

EFFECT OF SUCCINYLCHOLINE ON SERUM POTASSIUM CONCENTRATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE

Pages

  148-151

Abstract

The most commonly employed relaxant for intubation is SUCCINYLCHOLINE (sch). The great advantage of Sch is that. it produces excellent intubating conditions. usually within a minute and its rapid offset of action by ester hydrolysis. Several early case reports have suggested that patients with renal failure are susceptible to a hyperkalemic response to Sch.Nevertheless. more controlled studies showed that patients not to be any more suscpetible to an exaggerated response to Schthan are those with normal renal function. In this double - blind clinical trial study 40 patients were allocated randomly to two groups. The aim of the investigation was to determine the effect of schon POTASSIUM concentrations in serum during anesthesia in RENAL TRANSPLANTATION. POTASSIUM values were measured 5 minutes before the induction and again 5 minutes after the induction of anesthesia. The groups were simillar with respect to demographic data and potential confounding variables. The meam change in serum K levels for Sch group was 0.45 mmol/lit (95% CI 0.16 to 0.7 mmol/lit) and 0.2 mmol/lit (95% CI - 0.3 to 0.35 mmol/lit) for control group but there were no statistical differences between the two groups. Our results indicate that the administration of Sch in CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE might be possible without significant increasing of serum POTASSIUM level.
