Abstract

SPINAL CORD COMPRESSION due to EXTRAMEDULLARY HEMATOPOIESIS is a well - described but rare syndrome in several hematologic disorders, including beta-thalassemia. The literature is not uniform about the optimal treatment of these syndrome and different modes of thrapy have been proposed so far, including surgical exision or decompressing laminectomy, small doses of radiotherapy, hypertransfusion. Three patients with thalassemia intermida, who developed neurological complications, are described. Diagnosis were based on the clinical findings, MRI, Myelography.Two patients were treated with surgery and transfusion and one with radiotherapy and transfusion. All of our patients have made almost complete clinical recoveries from cord compression.
