Abstract

CYSTIC MENINGIOMAs are rare tumors, similar to glial or metastatic tumors, that show cystic or necrotic changes in CT scan or MRI. Diagnosis of CYSTIC MENINGIOMAis difficult before surgery. In a 20-year retrospective research from 1981-2001, we reviewed the medical files of 250 patients who had surgery in the Neurosurgery Ward of Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad. Of those cases, which were diagnosed as Meningioma, 10 were CYSTIC MENINGIOMA (4%), 7 female and 3 male (30%). The youngest patient was 25 years old, and the oldest was 70 years old, mean age 41.2. The most important symptoms were respectively: headache (6 cases), .loss of vision (5 cases), mental disorder (3 cases), atld epilepsy (5 cases). The most common symptoms were bilateral papill edema (5 cases), optic nerve atrophy (2 cases), and hemiparesia (3 cases). Tumor location data by CT scan and MRI were as follow: frontal area (5 cases), temporal (3 cases), paretial (2 cases). Radiography methods have improved today, and MRI clearly shows tumor adhesion to the dura and the interphase between the tumor, cyst and brain. Thus, the tumor can be identified as cystic glioma, and metastatic tumor with cystic change, prior to surgery.
