Abstract

Introduction: Golestan has the second highest prevalence of tuberculosis in Iran. We conducted this study to evaluate the frequency of coexisting medical conditions and their effects on some epidemiologic factors in patients with tuberculosis in this area.Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional descriptive study we checked the records of all patients (older than 13 years) admitted during period 2001 to 2005 with PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS at 5th of Azar hospital of Gorgan, Iran. Demographic information, age, sex, time of admission at the hospital and coexisting medical conditions (diabetes, CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE, corticosteroids consumption and malignancies) were extracted from the patient's file. Chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used for statistical analysis. Results: We studied 243 patients with PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS, during 5 years. The mean age of the patients was 50.15 years (SD=19 years). Of total, 162 cases (66.7%) had not any Co-morbidity. DIABETES MELLITUS was the most prevalent condition with an overall prevalence of 23.05 percent. Co-morbidity of tuberculosis and diabetes was significantly higher in females than males (p<0.05).Conclusion: Our results suggest that patients with co-morbidities (such as diabetes) and respiratory signs should be assessed for PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS. Also, in the patients with PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS, diabetes screening should be considered.
