Abstract

Background and objectives: NEEDLE STICK injury (NSI) is the most dangerous event that can be threat HEALTH CARE WORKERS (HCWs), and is responsible for 80-90 percent of infectious agents' transmission to HCWs. Among the factors effective in decreasing the rate of these injuries, intervention to prevent exposure has the greatest chance for success, so we designed this cross sectional study to find frequency of NSI in HCWs and factors affected it.Material and methods: This cross sectional study was done in 2008. Frequency of NSI in last five years and factors affected it evaluated with 2 questionnaires. Content validity of these questionnaires confirmed with fuscous group discussion. For data analysis we use SPSS soft ware version 16.Results: From 137 workers responsible for wards cleaning, washing and wastes collecting, 72 cases (72%) had NSI in last five years. The most of these injuries had occurred in morning shifts, in hospital Laboratory, CCU, surgery ward and operation rooms. Needle and other sharp devices passing off in conventional sweepings bags are responsible for more than 50% of worker's NSI.From 431 nurses responsible for patient's care and drug injections, 55% had NSI in last five years. The most of these injuries had occurred in morning shifts, in burned patients care ward, pediatrics, hematology, cardiac, Intensive care unit wards and emergency room. Factors such as patients overloading, mindneslless and fatigue that disturbed concentration were responsible for more than 59% of NSIs.Conclusion: More than 50% of HCW had been potentially disposed to contamination with dangerous infecting agents. The rate of NSI for wards cleaning workers and nurses were 0.29 & 0.46 person per year respectively. These findings represent that some persons injured frequently but some of them injured none or less.
