Abstract

Background and objective: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an important public health problem in countries of the Middle East including Iran. With improvement in economic and hygiene conditions, the age of acquiring HAV infection is shifting from early childhood to young adulthood which causes serious complications of HAV. Now, the current available data regarding hepatitis A SEROEPIDEMIOLOGY in Iran are limited. The aim of this study was to determine the SEROEPIDEMIOLOGY of hepatitis A in children of 6 months to 20 years residing in Tehran.Materials and methods: A total of 1065 cases between ages 6 months to 20 years were included in this study. Plasma samples of these cases were tested for the presence of total anti- HAV.Results: The prevalence of total anti-HAV was 66.1%. HAV prevalence rates according to age groups were as follows: 55.1% between 6 months and 5.9 years, 52.9% between 6 and 10.9 years, 65.2% between 11 and 15.9 years, 85% between 16 and 20.9 years. Total anti-HAV positivity in terms of age groups was significantly different from each other (P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between genders regarding to anti-HAV positivity. Conclusion: Our study showed that hepatitis A is prevalent in children of Tehran and hepatitis A infection is an important public health problem in this region. So for HAV prevention, vaccination of children will be beneficial.
