Abstract

Objectives: To determine the rates, and risk factors of hospital- acquired infection in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units (PICU, NICU). Methods: A prospective study was conducted on all patients at the Children's Hospital Medical Center ICU's who were admitted to the PICU and NICU from Oct. 23, 1997 to Oct. 22, 1998 except who died or transferred within 48 hours after admission. Data collected from all these patients included demographic, infections, therapeutic interventions and [mal outcome. Results: There were 900 patients who admitted during this period. 28 ICU-acquired infection occurred among 218 (12.8%) who admitted more than 48 hours in the ICU' s. The most frequent reported sites were lower respiratory tract (15 [53.5%]), bloodstream, skin, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, and surgical wounds. The most frequently isolated micro - organisms were: Staphylococcus aurous, Klebsiella pneumonia (each 21.4%) with overall 64.3% resistance to ordinary used antibiotics in intensive care setting. The length of stay in ICU, total parenteral nutrition, younger age, the invasive instrumentation and mechanical ventilation were significantly correlated with HOSPITAL - ACQUIRED INFECTION. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant prevalence of ICU - acquired infection in pediatrics and neonates. However, the prevention of NOSOCOMIAL INFECTION remains essential among critically ill patients.
