Abstract

Purpose: To demonstrate optical (visual) and refractive results and complications of MICROKERATOME-assisted LAMELLAR KERATOPLASTY in patients with anterior corneal opacities. Materials & Methods: A noncomparative case series of ten patients who had automated LAMELLAR KERATOPLASTY for treating anterior corneal opacities with ALTK system. Refraction, visual outcome, pachymetry, specular microscopy, confocal microscopy were evaluated in all patients.Results: Surgery was uneventful in 9 patients, however in one case microperforation of the stromal bed occurred. In 70% of patients postoperative best corrected visual acuity was 20/40 or better. Mean spherical equivalent was -2.8 diopterat 3 months after surgery.Corneal thickness was more than expected. Endothelial cell count did not show significant change after surgery.Conclusion: Automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty is a useful technique for managing anterior corneal opacities by harvesting intact corneal layers.
