Abstract

Background & Purpose: A variety of nonsurgical and surgical techniques have been used for treatment of CONVERGENCE EXCESS ESOTROPIA, but results remain unsatisfactory. This study was done to evaluate the effects of slanted RECESSION of medial rectus muscle in CONVERGENCE EXCESS ESOTROPIA at Farabi Eye Hospital from May 2000 to April 2001.Patients and Methods: In a clinical trial, the deviation was measured before and after slanted RECESSION of medial rectus muscles in 10 patients with a difference of more than 15 prism diopters between near and distance ESOTROPIA. After 6 months of follow-up, measurements were repeated and evaluated by the T test and paired T test.Results: The difference between near and distance ESOTROPIA was 19.7±4.1 prism diopters which was reduced to 6.1±2.2 after surgery (69% reduction in deviation discrepancy P=0.0001).Conclusion: According to successful results of this technique while considering the outcomes of conventional techniques, the author suggests slanted RECESSION of medial recti for treatment of patients with CONVERGENCE EXCESS ESOTROPIA.
