Abstract

Epinephrine is frequently used in cataract surgery to dilate the pupil. To determine the effects of different concentrations of pure epinephrine on the CORNEAl endothelial cells, forty-two eyes of twenty-one RABBITs were randomly allocated into five groups. Solutions containing balanced salt solution, 1/500,000 epinephrine, 1/100,000 epinephrine,1/50,000 epinephrine, and 1/10,000 epinephrine were injected into the anterior chamber of the eyes of the five groups. Changes in the CORNEAl cell density and polymegathism were assessed using specular biomicroscope, before, 2 hours and one week after the injection. The results showed that there was no significant difference in cell density and polymegathism among the five groups. Intracameral injection of pure epinephrine does not produce toxic effects on CORNEAl endothelial cells in the RABBIT.
