Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the potential effects of INTACS (keravision, Inc) insertion for the management of KERATOCONUS.Methods: In a prospective self-controlled clinical study, INTACS were inserted in 22 keratoconic eyes of 19 patients with a mean age of 31.77 years (range, 21 to 45). All patients had clear central CORNEAs and were CONTACT LENS intolerant. Two INTACS segments of 0.45 mm thickness were inserted in the CORNEA to achieve maximum flattening of the cone area. Mean follow-up periodwas 5.43 months (range, 1-18).Results: Mean uncorrected visual acuity (LogMAR) improved from 1.84±0.30 SD preoperatively to 0.32:t0.35 SD postoperatively. Spherical and astigmatic refractive errors were reduced by a mean value of 2.39±1.26 0 and 1.39±1.59 0 respectively. CORNEAl topography was improved in terms of cone size and height. No major complication occurred in this series.Conclusion: INTACS insertion seems to be a safe and effective procedure to manage CONTACT LENS intolerant keratoconic patients with clear central CORNEAs.
