Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of posterior fixation suture (PF) to prevent recurrence of intermittent exotropia after bilateral rectus recession (BLR).Methods: Noncomparative interventional case series on 7 patients with basic X(T) with deviation of 20-40 prism diopter (PD) who underwent BLR with PF by one surgeon.Patients were grouped according to their angle of deviation on day 3 of the surgery as follows:Group I: OrthotropiaGroup II: Overcorrection 1-10 PDGroup III: Overcorrection 11-20 PDGroup IV: UndercorrectionAngle of deviation was measured and compared on 3 days, 8 weeks and 6 months postoperatively. Angle of deviation up to 5 PD, esoshift or exoshift relative to day 3 or comparative to orthotropia were considered as consistency in motor alignment. Results: None of the patients showed difference in the angle of deviation on day 3 or 8 weeks postoperatively. All patients remained orthotropic 6 months after surgery. Conclusion: It seems posterior fixation suture can prevent recurrence of intermittent exotropia when motor alignment is conserved.
