Abstract

Chlorine is a greenish yellow gas and soluble in water. In the first word war chlorine was used in large quantities as a chemical weapon. Now it is used in purification of water, swimming pools, pulp mill, household cleaning agents and in the several manufactures. Chlorine is a mucus membrane and respiratory tract irritant. The threshold value is 1 ppm. A significant prolonged exposure to 5-8 ppm may cause acute mild illness. A concentration of 50 ppm may cause serious damage while 100 ppm may prove lethal.In this experimental study, 30 male sprague-Dawley rats were examined. In the first group (n=10) rats were affected by chlorine. In the second group, animals and prophylactic agent for poisoning that was HYDROCORTISONE (50 mg/kg). The Third group were testifier. Hemorrhage from animals eyes and dyspnea were scored. Atrial blood gases were examined and after scarifying animals the lungs of rats were assessment by pathologic scores like areas of hemorrhage, thickening of alveolar septa, rupture of Alveolar walls and deformity of tissue textures. Then data were evaluate by statistical tests.Results show that HYDROCORTISONE have propylactic effect in the acute CHLORINE POISONING. Hydrocortison prevent eyes hemorrhage and dysnea (P<0.01) and histopathologic damages (P<0.05). the injurious effects of chlorine are due to its potent oxidative properties which liberate nascent oxygen a protoplasmic poison and to the fact that hydrochloric acid formed on combination with body moisture. We need more studies for exact prophylactic mechanism.
