Title

CLOZAPINE EFFECTS ON ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY OF CHRONIC SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENTS

Pages

Abstract

Background: Refractory schizophrenic patients do not get cured with typical antipsychotic drugs but have showed good treatment response with CLOZAPINE, a novel (atypical) antipsycotic drug. CLOZAPINE major side effects include seizures and agranulocytosis. For finding CLOZAPINE's efficacy in refractory schizophrenic patients and CLOZAPINE-induced EEG abnonnalities, the present study was carried out over the schizophrenic patients admitted sequentially in Imam Hossein hospital, in 1999-2000. Materials and methods: It was a clinical trial. Diagnosis of schizophrenia was based on DSM-IV Criteria for REFRACTORY SCHIZOPHRENIA. Prior to initiation of CLOZAPINE's treatment, EEG was obtained and in case of normal EEG, the candidate was included in our research study. CLOZAPINE was administered at the dosage of 400:1:86.6 mg. Second EEG was obtained 3 week later and reported by a neurologist who was unaware of the study (double-blind). EEG changes were recorded as the presence of slow (theta & delta) waves and were judged with McNemar's statistic. Results: IS refractory schizophrenic patients, including 11 males and 4 females were studied. The mean age of the candidates was 32:1:8.3 years. EEG changes were observed in 12 patients (80%) (p<0.001). Conclusion: CLOZAPINE-induced EEG abnonnalities (slow EEG) are a common side effect, thus, further investigations are strong recommended.
