COMPARISON OF A HERBAL COMPOUND EFFECT (NEELN, ASH TREE, JUGLANSERGIA) WITH GLUCANTIME ON CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS IN ANILNAL MODEL (BALB/C MICE)

Abstract

 Introduction: Leishmaniasis is one of the six important parasitic diseases of the tropical parts in the world. Many TREATMENT methods have been devised against leishmaniasis but resistance of the parasite to certain medicines resulted in new problems concerning this disease.Materials and Methods: This study was carried out during 18 months in Isfahan center of health researches and education affiliated to the faculty of public health and institute of health researches in 1999.We studied the effect of a herbal combination on a CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS modeled in, the Balb/c mice this compound was made up from Ash tree containing Flavenoids and Quercetin derivatives, Juglansergia containing Tanan and Juglan, and Neem, containing Nimbiol The animals were divided into five groups each of 10 mice and were studied as below:Group 1: The mice that were not infected with L.major and did not received any drug. Group2: The mice Infected with L.major but no drug was used to treat them. Group 3 : The mice were treated by topical injection of Glucantime.Group 4: The mice were treated by the herbal ointment and finally group 5 were the mice were treated by the base of the herbal ointment. The animals received herbal combination topically twice a day for 30 days. Cure rate and TREATMENT effects of the combination was determined by measurement diameter of lesions and observation of leishman bodies. Findings: Results of this study showed that the herbal combination didn"t have any significant effect on CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS in the Balb/C model (P<0.05).Conclusion: Regarding the experiences obtained from this study, the assessment of efficacy of this drug in the form of lotion in the first stages of leishmaniasis is recommended by more studies.
