Abstract

Sheikh Mosleh-o-Din Sa'di Shirazi, the greatest poet and writer of the 7th century (13th century A.D.) is undoubtedly one of the most able and famous poets and writers all through the Persian literature. The vast knowledge and experiences gained during long journies to different countries and meetings with great men and scholars are reflected in his works, providing unique collections and anyhologies covering vast areas and subjects. Sa'di's experiences are specially reflected in two famous independent works: Boostan and Golestan. These ethical writings which include advice and practical lessons for life comprise passages (prose and poetry) which indicate his tendency towards PRAGMATISM. Pragmatist tendencies of Sa'di are most evident in his addresses to important political figures (commanders and kings). Good intentioned lies, opportunism, cruelty, violence, preventing evils in advance, and other similar themes are not rare in Boostan and Golestan. One can compare some passages of the last mentioned anthologies with Siasat-Nameh of Khajeh Nezam-ol-Molk.There are incredible similarities between these three writings and 'The Prince of Machiaveli' which has been - as a matter of fact - exposed to various and, at times, harsh criticisms since its first publication up to the present time. This article aims to recognize and introduce indications and implications of pragmatic thinking and applications of its principles in Boostan and Golestan. It is also intended to show the relationship between Sa'di's PRAGMATISM and the transcendent NORMs and VALUEs of the time.
