Title

A COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF FIRST PREMOLAR EXTRACTIONS ON THIRD MOLAR ANGULATIONS (RESEARCH)

Pages

  34-43

Abstract

Although the effect of third molars on the stability of orthodontic treatment has been studied extensively, but the effect of orthodon tic treatment, particularly premolar extraction, on third molars has not been substantially studied. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the changes in third molar angulations in patient treated with extraction (group: 1) and without extraction (group: 2). Records of 36, non extraction and 36 FIRST PREMOLAR EXTRACTION cases were examined. The pretreatment and post treatment pantographs were digitized, and the angles between the third molar long axis and the occlusal plane were measured. Using student's t-test changes in third molar angulations from pretreatment to post treatment for the two groups were compared for statistical differences using a student's t- test. On average, the mandibular third molars in two groups and maxillary third molars in extraction group showed an improvement in angulations relative to occlusal plane and maxillary third molar in non extraction group showed an undesirable change in angulations relative to occlusal plane. Statistical analysis revealed there were no significant differences in the change in third molar angulations in either group. The result suggests that factors other than FIRST PREMOLAR EXTRACTION may influence third molar angulations.
