Abstract

Introduction & Objective: Establishment of reliable vascular access for resuscitation, parentral nutrition and long - term antibiotic therapy is very important in sick children and NEONATEs. In this study, we evaluated the results of CENTRAL VEIN CATHETER (CVC) placement in sick patients hospitalized in Al-Zahra hospital of Medical University of Isfahan.Materials & Methods: Twenty-one CENTRAL VEIN CATHETERs were placed in children and NEONATEs during six months. All operations were performed under monitoring anesthesia care in operating room. For operation, internal jugular vein was canulated with a 14-16 G catheter. Catheter insertion site was repaired by nylon 6-0. In all patients, intra operative COMPLICATIONS such as bleeding and failure and postoperative COMPLICATIONS such as catheter thrombosis, fluid leakage, accidental dislodgement and bleeding were recorded. Duration of placement was also recorded. Results: In this study, 21 patients (9 males, 12 females) were evaluated. Fifteen patients were NEONATEs. Age range was one day to 3 months. Mean of children age was 47.9±18.47 days. The lowest weight was 700 gr. Duration of catheter usage was 18±11.9 days (1-98 days). There was no intra operative failure. Postoperative bleeding was seen in one patient. It occurred immediately and the patient was expired. Other COMPLICATIONS were leakage (4.8%), thrombosis (9.5%), and dislodgement (9.5%). There was no correlation between patient age and catheter usage duration. Conclusions: CENTRAL VEIN CATHETER can be used in sick children and NEONATEs for a long period of time.
