EFFECT OF AZOSPIRILLUM BRASILENSE AND SALINITY OF IRRIGATION WATER ON YIELD, PROTEIN CONTENT AND SEDIMENTATION RATE OF PROTEIN IN DIFFERENT WHEAT CULTIVARS

Abstract

 In this experiment, the effects of inoculation of WHEAT cultivars with AZOSPIRILLUM brasilense and salinity of irrigation water on yield, PROTEIN CONTENT and SEDIMENTATION RATE of protein (SRP) for WHEAT grain were examined. For this reason, a factorial experiment was conducted with three replicates including three cultivars of WHEAT (Omid, Ghods and Roshan), which were inoculated with and without AZOSPIRILLUM brasilense. Irrigation water was applied into the pots during growing season with different levels of salinity (EC: 2, 5 and 8 dSm-1). At the harvest time, the yield (grain) and nitrogen, PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP in grain were measured. The results indicate that the seed inoculation, salinity of irrigation water and WHEAT cultivars have a significant effect on the yield, PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP. As salinity of irrigation water increased, the yield decreased but the PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP increased. In inoculated plants with AZOSPIRILLUM, all measurements were higher than non-inoculated pots. According to the results, AZOSPIRILLUM can modify the unfavorable condition (higher salinity) to obtain higher yield, PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP. However, the adverse effect of salinity of irrigation water was the same in non-inoculated plants. The interaction of cultivar, AZOSPIRILLUM and salinity of irrigation water had a significant effect on yield, PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP. The Ghods cultivar was homolog to AZOSPIRILLUM compared to the other cultivars and therefore the yield, PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP of inoculated Ghods cultivar increased 24.2%, 31% and 24.1%, respectively. The obtained data were higher in the other inoculated cultivars but with lower values compared to the non-inoculated ones. In saline condition, the addition of PROTEIN CONTENT and SRP were also higher in Ghods cultivar compared to the others cultivars.
