Abstract

Non-pharmacological methods of pain relief could be used for POSTOPERATIVE PAINs in childhood. This experimental, single and blind study was performed to determine the effects of DISTRACTION and progressive muscle RELAXATION on pain intensity and analgesic drug usage during the postoperative first 24-hours in CHILDREN. The sample was collected by simple continues sampling method, and consisted of ninety 5-12 years old CHILDREN undertaken ENT operation. They were divided by random allocation to three groups of 30: two experimental groups (relaxation and DISTRACTION) and control group. Acetaminophen as analgesic drug was taken by PRN order in the three groups. Pain intensity in CHILDREN was assessed by self-report Oucher scale and amount of used analgesic drug was calculated based on nursing notes. The results showed that the average pain-intensity in DISTRACTION, RELAXATION and control groups were 18, 27 and 39 respectively. T-test showed that the pain intensity in the control group was significantly higher than the two experimental groups and there was no significant difference between DISTRACTION and RELAXATION groups. Also ANOVA test showed that the amount of taken analgesic drug in the control group was significantly higher than the two experimental groups and there was no significant difference between DISTRACTION and RELAXATION groups. Therefore RELAXATION and DISTRACTION techniques were effective to ameliorate pain intensity in ENT postoperative period in CHILDREN.
