Abstract

Moderation rule constitutes the core of ARISTOTLE’s’ VIRTUE ethics. On the basis of this rile, all VIRTUEs lie at the middle and the VICEs originate from taking the extremes in actions and emotions. Elaborating on this rule, commentators and critics of ARISTOTLE have sometimes made unwarranted interpretations of this rule. Examples in point are the semantic pragmatic interpretation of the rule, the interpretation of moderation as the accurate MEAN which is equidistant from the two extremes, the fact that MODERATION RULE does not conform with all VIRTUEs, attributing EXCESS and DEFECT to moderation, and making a linear equation between VIRTUEs and VICEs.The present article addresses the above interpretations with the aim of correcting them.
