Abstract

Backgrounds & Aims: BODY IMAGE is actually an individual's attitude, perception and, understanding of self SELF-ESTEEM is also feeling worthy about one's self Persons who have negative BODY IMAGE or low SELF-ESTEEM are more likely to suffer from depression, isolation, and obsession. Passing from childhood to adolescence and youth is one of the most important stages of life over it, person's attention to his/her appearance peaks with the aim of drawing others attention. Adolescents' positive BODY IMAGE improves their ability to make use of their talents and establish a good relationship with others along with sense of worth. So the aim of this research was to study adolescents' BODY IMAGE and SELF-ESTEEM in order to find their problems and their causes and make suggestions for building a suitable learning environment and solving complexities.Materials & Methods: In this descriptive research, BODY IMAGE and SELF-ESTEEM of high school students of Uromia has been studied. 397 students were randomly selected from4 girls' and 4 boys' high schools. Data has been analyzed using chi-square test. Results: 197 students out of 397 were female (49/6%) and 200 were male (50/4%). Results of the study revealed that the majority of subjects had moderate BODY IMAGE and high SELF-ESTEEM. Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between SELF-ESTEEM and gender (p=0/138), and scholastic achievement (p=0/062). The results also revealed that there was no significant relationship between BODY IMAGE and gender (0/066), and scholastic achievement (p=0/064).Discussion: In spite of relatively desirable results, findings of this study showed that the majority of students suffer from lack of sufficient emotional support as a result of cultural and economic insufficiencies or parents daily preoccupations. Adolescents often don't have the ability and preparedness to conform the new situations. So it seems necessary to provide parents, school boards, and authorities with information about factors that can lead to SELF-ESTEEM reduction and influence BODY IMAGE negatively, while involving them with recognition and confronting those factors.
