Title

THE EFFECTS OF FOLIC ACID ON TRATOGENIC SIDE EFFECTS OF VALPROIC ACID IN NEURAL TUBE DEVELOPMENT OF MOUSE EMBRYOS

Abstract

Introduction: VALPROIC ACID is an anticonvulsant drug and its consumption in pregnancy leads to NEURAL TUBE defects. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of FOLIC ACID in preventing teratogenic effects of VALPROIC ACID in MOUSE EMBRYOs.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study 30 female mice were included. The mice were divided in to three groups of control, experimental I and II.Mice in the group of experimental I received 200 mg/kg VALPROIC ACID and in group of experimental 11 received 200 mg/kg VALPROIC ACID and 4 mg/kg FOLIC ACID intraperitonealy on the 8th day of gestation. On the 13th day of gestation, the fetus was removed from uterine and their weight and height were measured and then kept in fixation. Finally, the specimen was examined microscopically. Results: The results showed that the weight and height in the experimental I significantly decreased in comparison to other groups (p<0/05). The rate of embryo absorption in the group of experimental I was more than other groups. Microscopic evidence showed some changes in neuroepithelial layer and also NEURAL TUBE defect in experimental I.Conclusion: Results showed that FOLIC ACID can prevent teratogenic effects of VALPROIC ACID in embryos whose mothers were exposed to VALPROIC ACID.
