Title

A COMPARISON OF SERUM PROGESTERONE LEVELS IN NORMAL PREGNANCY AND THREATENED ABORTION UNDER 12 WEEKS OF GESTATION

Abstract

Objective: In this study a comparison of serum PROGESTERONE levels in pregnant women with normal and THREATENED ABORTION under 12 weeks of gestation was done.Materials and methods: This is a case -control prospective study in pregnant women under 12 weeks of gestation referred during the year 1380 to Obstetric Clinic and Maternity Ward of Ghaem Hospital. 47 healthy pregnant women and 50 pregnant women with THREATENED ABORTION (spotting without cervical dilatation) under 12 weeks of gestation was compared. The main subject of study was serum PROGESTERONE level. We followed them up to be informed of the outcome of their pregnancies after 20 week of gestation (that means they had ongoing PREGNANCY). The majority of patients were in 20-24 years age group, and their husbands were in 25-29 years age groups. Results: The mean serum PROGESTERONE level in patients with healthy PREGNANCY was 29ng/ml, and in those with THREATENED ABORTION was 24 ng/ml.The mean serum PROGESTERONE level in those patients who finally developed abortion was 20 ng/ml, in those with healthy PREGNANCY who terminated it normally was 29 ng/ml, and in those with THREATENED ABORTION who their pregnancies continued and were not aborted was 29ng/ml. There was a statistically significant difference between mean serum PROGESTERONE levels of two groups. Conclusion: Early PREGNANCY maintenance depends on PROGESTERONE production by the developing trophoblasts of the placenta which occurs at 7-10 weeks of gestation. In regard to results of this study, it seems that serum PROGESTERONE level is a suitable marker to help us to estimate the final outcome of patients with THREATENED ABORTION.
