Abstract

Back ground: Muscle cramp is painful, unusual and local contraction of a muscle or part of it. 5- 30 % of women complain from LEG CRAMPs during PREGNANCY. The goal of this research was inspection of therapeutic effect of VITAMIN E on LEG CRAMPs during PREGNANCY.Materials and Methods: In this prospective double blind clinical study 80 pregnant women who had LEG CRAMPs during PREGNANCY were inspected for frequency, intensity and time of cramps. Then they were coincidentally given a box of 28 capsules, which contained 400 mg VITAMIN E, or a box of capsules which contained starch. They were advised to take one capsule daily for four weeks. Then the patients were assessed for frequency and intensity of cramps.Results: After completing the treatment frequency and intensity of the cramps were significantly lower in case group (p=0/003, p=0.001). There was a significant difference between two groups in evaluation of treatment (p= 0/012). There was no side effect seen with drug or placebo.Conclusion: It seems prescription of VITAMIN E is more effective than placebo in decreasing frequency and intensity of LEG CRAMPs during PREGNANCY.
