Abstract

Background: BREAST CANCER is the most common cancer among women. Improving QUALITY OF LIFE by increasing their functions is the most important goal in cancerous patients. This study looked at the effects of MASSAGE therapy on QUALITY OF LIFE in women with BREAST CANCER after surgery.Material and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, among 53 women with BREAST CANCER referred to surgery and oncology clinics in Arak, thirty patients were randomly selected and divided into two groups of MASSAGE therapy (n=15) and control (n=15). Serum CORTISOL levels were measured, QUALITY OF LIFE questionnaire (SF36) was filled, and MENTAL HEALTH was evaluated in both groups. Data analysis was done by SPSS software version 16 using paired t-test and one-way analysis of variance with a confidence level of 95% (p<0.05) was performed. Results: The results showed that physical (p=0.001) and psycho-social aspects (p=0.002) improved significantly in case group compared with control subjects. MASSAGE has also improved QUALITY OF LIFE and MENTAL HEALTH in BREAST CANCER patients after surgery (p<0.05). But, serum CORTISOL levels did not differ significantly between groups (p>0.05).Conclusions: The results of this study showed that MASSAGE therapy can be an effective intervention to improve QUALITY OF LIFE and MENTAL HEALTH in patients with BREAST CANCER after surgery.
