Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: HILSA FISH is a domestic fish of Iran. Its extract causes reduction of blood cholesterol level and inhibits platelet aggregation. This study was performed on the possible effect of dietary HILSA FISH extract supplementation on cerebral ISCHEMIA in male RAT.METHODS: Thirty male wistar RATs were divided into 3 equal groups, experimental (fed with HILSA FISH extract), positive control (treated with clopidogrel) and control received neither fish extract nor clopidogrel. The RATs were anesthetized with thiopental and after a median incision of the neck skin, bilateral common carotids was exposed and occluded whilst leaving the vagus nerves intact. After 1 hour animals sacrificed and their brain were processed for histopathologic exams.FINDINGS: Histopathologic findings showed significant difference between experimental and control groups in hippocampus (p<0.05).CONCLUSION: The present findings suggest that dietary supplements of HILSA FISH extract may be beneficial in prophylactic treatment of ischemic cerebral diseases.
