CLINICAL AND ETIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF HEADACHE IN A NEUROLOGY CLINIC IN BABOL (1995-2004)

Abstract

 BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Headache is a major chief complain of patients and it is responsible for a great share of the costs of disability in population. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and epidemiological aspects of headache in Babol.METHODS: This descriptive analytical study was performed to assess the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with headache who had been referred to the clinic of neurology during 10 years. Patients with known brain or other internal or systemic diseases were excluded from the study.FINDINGS: Among 48750 patients referred to the neurology clinic, 25810 (52.94%) patients had headache and 5269 cases (26.55%) aged from 30 to 39 years. Headache was more common in females (61.19%) than the males. TENSION HEADACHE (49.28%) and MIGRAINE (25.76%) were the most frequent headaches. Housekeeper (31.1%) and employees (21.43%) comprised most of these patients, and stress was the most frequent precipitating factors in case of primary headache, and sleep disturbance and food items were the next ones. These also revealed high frequency of analgesic use (72%) in primary headache cases. Although TENSION HEADACHE was in (49.28%) and MIGRAINE was in (25.76%) cases, and were the most causes of headache, but in the early diagnosis, these were 15.84% and 10.86% respectively, which disclosed great discrepancy between early and definite diagnosis of headache causes.CONCLUSION: This study showed the high prevalence of TENSION HEADACHE and MIGRAINE in neurological practice in our region.
