Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Proper excreta treatment like providing safe water is a priority of environmental sanitation program, but in reality such basic services are severely inadequate especially for the most people living in rural areas of developing countries. The study was conducted to determine the effect of ADOLESCENTs' PARTICIPATION on the percentage of rural households with sanitary LATRINE before and after intervention.METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was done on all ADOLESCENTs of Rostam Abad area, which is a rural area in Buien Zahra city, who covered 102 families. At first, training sessions based on the research objective were held for the ADOLESCENTs and then each of them took charge ofa few families for education and control. Ultimately, the percentage of rural families with sanitary LATRINE, were studied and compared before and after the ADOLESCENTs' PARTICIPATION. FINDINGS: Findings indicated that the mean of SANITARY STATUS of LATRINE index, before intervention was 9.6±2, whereas immediately after that, was 12.5±1.7. Using paired t-test showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.0001, t=-18.8). Two months after the intervention it reached to 12.7±1.5 Repeated measurement type of ANOVA with Wilk's test indicated a statistically significant differences (p<0.0001).CONCLUSION: Based on these findings, the rural ADOLESCENTs' PARTICIPATION can develop the sanitary LATRINE index in rural region. So encouraging ADOLESCENTs to participate in activities related to environmental health is suggested as a practical means to develop health indexes by villagers.
