Title

THE EFFECT OF LOW FREQUENCY MAGNETIC FIELD ON EXCITATORY INPUTS OF F1 NEURONAL SOMA MEMBRANE OF HELIX ASPERSA

Pages

  9-15

Abstract

Biological consequences of low frequency magnetic fields have been of great importance in modem societies. Despite the existing information, the exact mechanism and mode of action of these fields has not been determined yet. Therefore, the effect of 50 Hz magnetic field (2 and 8 mT) was investigated on the activity of excitatory inputs of FI neuronal soma membrane of Helix aspersa using in vitro current clamp method and application of 2 nA depolarizing currents. The results showed that Fl soma exhibited spontaneous activity without any external stimulation and regular discharges was observed even after injection of 2 nA depolarizing currents for a period of 500 ms. In addition, neuronal SYNAPTIC ACTIVITY was significantly modified in a time-dependent manner following application of 50 Hz magnetic field (8 mT).Taken together, these results showed that low frequency magnetic field may influence the synaptic behavior of neurons, possibly through changing the kinetic and gating of ionic channels and this can lead to changes in neuronal excitability.
