Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Considering the significance of CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE and lack of information about its prevalence in children in Kashan this study was carried out during 1996-2000 to determin the effect of environmental and genetic factors on ethiology of the disease.MATERIALS & METHODS: The study was descriptive. The related data was collected in predesigned questionnaires and all children with a definitive diagnosis of CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE were studied. In this respect, gender, age, type of disorder, genetic disorder, CONSANGUINIOUS MARRIAGE, failure to thrive and number of children were considered. RESULTS: The results showed that out of 7692 hospitalized children 45 cases (0.6%) had CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE (CHD). Ventricular septal defect (VSD) was the most common CHD with the frequency of 17.8% (8 cases). The prevalence of coarctation of aorta, tetralogy of fallout, pulmonary stenosis, primary pulmonary hypertension, patent ductus arteriosus, atrio ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, aortic stenosis and other congeintal heart sidease were 13.3%, 13.3%, 11.1%, 8.8%, 6.6%, 6.6%, 6.6%, 4.4% and 11.1% respectively. Of 45 childern who had CHD, 16 cases (35.6%) were girls and 29 cases (64.4%) were boys. Of 13 cases who had genetic disorder 11 cases had Down syndrome. 44.4% of children with CHD was belong to consanguine family.CONCLUSION: The result of this study showed that VSD was the most common CHD. CONSANGUINIOUS MARRIAGE may be one of the risk factors of CHD, which needs further study.
