DETERMINING THE FREQUENCY OF PREVALENT METHODS OF PARENTAL, INTERVENTION OF INFANTILE COLIC

Abstract

Colic is a behavioral syndrome which occurs in clinically healthy children in the first weeks of life. In this research, methods of parental intervention of colic in their children were evaluated. 513 children (257 boys & 256 girls) 1-20 weeks of age were assessed. Data were collected by trained personnel through interviewing mothers in health centers. Findings showed that 32.7% (n=168) of newborns had experienced colic and its prevalence in both sexes was relatively similar (34.5% boys & 31.6% girls). Colic was more prevalent in children weighing more than 2500 grams. This study also showed that prescribed drugs by practitioners for treating colic, were not effective in most cases, but the effectiveness of herbal and non-medicinal treatments were clearly evident. Colic prevalence in the first three months of life was more than other ages (74.4% of colic children were in this age range). Embracement and back massage were effective in improving colic in 87% f cases. Having them on their abdomen, putting them in the cradle and placing a warm towel on the abdomen proved effective for 90.2%, 82.6% and 91.7% of the cases respectively. Tribal herbal methods such as Brenjas (Achillae millelolium), FIus negin flower (fertilizia imerialis) and halpah were effective in curing colic in 88.4%, 94.5%, and 100% of the cases respectively.
